On the occasion of the International Day of Traditional Sports and Games in the year of 2024, President of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG) Mr. Khalil Ahmed Khan, said that "this day serves as a powerful reminder of the vibrant cultural heritage embedded in our traditional sports and games, which are integral to the fabric of our societies."
He said that, "As we come together once more to celebrate the International Day of Traditional Sports and Games, I am deeply moved by a profound sense of pride and responsibility. On behalf of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG), I extend my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to everyone who acknowledges the significance of this global celebration."
Mr. Khan highlighted that each year the Council highlights that traditional sports and games are far more than simple pastimes; they are vital expressions of our cultural identities, historical legacies, and community values. Every game and sport embodies the spirit, creativity, and traditions of its people, telling the unique stories of diverse communities across the globe. In an era characterized by rapid globalization and digital transformation, it has never been more urgent to safeguard and promote these ancient practices.
In his Official Message on this occasion he further said, "These activities are essential for preserving our cultural heritage. They keep ancient traditions, languages, and folklore alive, providing a tangible link to the wisdom of our ancestors and ensuring that future generations remain connected to their roots. Traditional sports and games also play a crucial role in building community and identity. They unite people, strengthen social bonds, and reinforce shared values, fostering a sense of pride and enhancing social cohesion."
Mr. Khan called upon all stakeholders to join the annual celebration of this International Day by mentioning: "Today, I urge our partners—including governments, policymakers, educational institutions, and stakeholders worldwide—to join the ICTSG in our mission. It is vital that we acknowledge the cultural and educational value of traditional sports and support them through national curricula, local events, and preservation initiatives. Comprehensive research and documentation of these sports are equally crucial, as they will help preserve their history and serve as valuable resources for future generations."
"We witness every year how local communities are the heart of this celebration. By promoting community-based events, festivals, and competitions, we not only encourage local participation but also raise public awareness about the importance of these practices. I also invite international organizations and cultural bodies to collaborate with us on global initiatives to celebrate and share traditional sports."
International Day of Traditional Sports and Games will be held on 14 August 2024 this year, is not just a celebration but a call to action. The ICTSG invites all stakeholders to unite in order to preserve these invaluable cultural treasures and ensure they continue to inspire and enrich our lives for generations to come.
