A special session at TSG Day 2025 titled "XR & TSG: From Tribal Grounds to the Metaverse" brought together Extended Reality experts and TSG advocates to explore the intersection of heritage sport and immersive technology.
Christine Schwarz, Co-Founder of VRB, presented on how mixed reality simulations can bridge modern technology with traditional sports, creating inclusive cultural practices that transcend geographic boundaries.
The session addressed a fundamental tension in TSG preservation: the risk that technology-mediated transmission loses the embodied, communal nature of traditional sport. Panelists emphasized that XR should be a complement to -not a replacement for -in-person practice and community transmission.
Proposed applications included virtual reality documentations of endangered sports for archival purposes, augmented reality overlays at live TSG events for international audiences, immersive educational tools for schools in diaspora communities, and digital twins of traditional sport environments for training purposes.
ICTSG announced plans to develop an XR Partnership Program, inviting technology companies to collaborate on pilot projects for five priority sports from the SRETS Framework.
"When a sport disappears, it is like a language no longer spoken. When we revive a game, we revive a culture."
