The World Ministerial Virtual Conference on Traditional Sports and Games (WMVC) was held from 14 August to 15 August 2021 and was jointly organized by the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG) and its continental bodies on the occasion of the International Day of Traditional Sports and Games.
Over 600 participants registered from 90 countries, including Ministers of Sports, Culture, Tourism and Youth, representatives of international organizations, traditional sports federations, and TSG practitioners from every continent. The Conference was one of the largest international gatherings ever dedicated exclusively to traditional sports and games.
The Conference featured key speeches by ICTSG President Khalil Ahmed Khan, Ambassador-at-Large Joël Bouzou (Founder and President of Peace and Sport), Philipp Müller-Wirth speaking on behalf of UNESCO Assistant Director-General Gabriela Ramos, and Rosa Rakotozafy, President of CIGEPS (Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport).
Key topics addressed during the two-day conference included: the importance of traditional sports and games for cultural heritage preservation; women empowerment through traditional sports; the revival and development of TSG at national level; integration of TSG into national education curricula; and the development of the ICTSG global governance framework.
The Conference adopted a series of recommendations to member states and international organizations urging greater commitment to documenting, preserving, and promoting traditional sports as living intangible cultural heritage. Delegates endorsed the framework for the first World Traditional Sports and Games and called on governments to formally recognize August 14 as the International Day of Traditional Sports and Games in their national calendars.
"When a sport disappears, it is like a language no longer spoken. When we revive a game, we revive a culture."
Khalil Ahmed Khan — President, ICTSG
