UNESCO and the Government of Turkmenistan organized an expert meeting on traditional sports along the Silk Road in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, during the first week of December 2018. The Chairman of the UNESCO TSG Advisory Committee, Mr. Khalil Ahmed Khan, along with committee members, attended the meeting upon UNESCO's invitation. During the meeting, Mr. Khan emphasized the significance of TSG in cultural preservation and physical activity. He highlighted UNESCO's efforts in safeguarding traditional sports, referencing past initiatives such as the Collective Consultation Meetings and the establishment of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG). Discussions included the development of an online encyclopedia, the strengthening of global cooperation through Letters of Commitment signed by multiple UNESCO Member States, and the identification of ten key traditional sports, including Belt Wrestling. The meeting also recognized the importance of publishing an encyclopedia on TSG along the Silk Road, further promoting the cultural heritage of these sports. This expert meeting contributed to ongoing efforts to integrate TSG into international policies and encourage member states to support the preservation and promotion of traditional sports and games globally.
