The UNESCO's TSG Delegation, comprising Chairman Adhoc Advisory Committee Mr.Khalil Ahmed Khan, UNESCO's Coordinator on TSG Mr.Marcellin Dally, and Rapporteur AAC Mr.Rana, visited Astana, Kazakhstan, in May 2018 at the invitation of Mr. Arystanbek Mukhameduily, Minister of Culture and Sports of Kazakhstan. On the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the delegation visited Astana to discuss the potential hosting of the first-ever World Traditional Sports and Games in 2021 in Nur-Sultan (Astana) as part of Kazakhstan’s 30th Independence Year celebrations. A tripartite Letter of Intent was signed between the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Association of National Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the UNESCO Ad Hoc Advisory Committee on Traditional Sports and Games at the National Museum of Kazakhstan on May 31, 2018. The document was signed by Minister Arystanbek Mukhameduily, Kairat Satybaldyuly, and Chairman UNESCO's AAC on TSG Mr.Khalil Ahmed Khan. The Letter of Intent outlined cooperation among the three parties in the field of traditional sports and games, with Kazakhstan officially submitting a bid to host the event. This bid was scheduled for finalization at the 4th UNESCO Collective Consultation Meeting in Turkey in August 2018. Speaking to the media, Chairman Mr.Khan stated, "Today we have signed the Letter of Intent between our Committee, National Sports Association, and the Ministry. Kazakhstan has expressed its intent to host the upcoming UNESCO World Traditional Sports and Games, and we are grateful for that. We hope to cooperate with Kazakhstan on a global level in the future." President of the Association, Mr. Satybaldyuly, emphasized that if UNESCO supported Kazakhstan’s bid, it would allow Kazakh athletes to showcase their talent in traditional sports during the country’s 30th independence anniversary celebrations in 2021. During the visit, the UNESCO TSG Delegation also attended the Tenge Ilu Championship and Audaryspak Championship, both Kazakh traditional sports events, held at Kazanat Racetrack in Astana in June 2018.
"When a sport disappears, it is like a language no longer spoken. When we revive a game, we revive a culture."
