Ukraine’s Engagement with Traditional Sports and ICTSG Foundation Overview On August 13–14, 2018, Ukraine was represented at UNESCO’s 4th Collective Consultation Meeting on Traditional Sports and Games in Istanbul, Turkey. Delegating on behalf of Ukraine was Mr. Voitoych Yaroslav, serving as Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports. The gathering at the Sheraton Grand Istanbul Ataşehir was a key milestone in establishing the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG), with Mr. Yaroslav signing the founding documents on behalf of Ukraine. Geographic and Cultural Significance Located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe, Ukraine’s diverse landscapes — from Black Sea coasts to Carpathian Mountains — have nurtured a rich tapestry of traditional and indigenous sports. These include community-driven contests, ritual games born from ancient Slavic customs, and unique physical traditions tied to seasonal celebrations and folklore. Traditional and Indigenous Sports of Ukraine
Cossack Games: Warrior-style horse and physical contests rooted in Ukraine’s Cossack tradition, emphasizing horsemanship, strength, and valor. Rushnyk Games: Cloth-wrapped ritual games performed during weddings and harvest festivals, symbolizing unity and community bonds. Vertep Tug-of-War: Traditional rope-pulling among villagers during church holidays, dating back several generations.
Each of these sports is a living expression of Ukrainian identity and heritage, promoting intergenerational continuity and social cohesion. Ukraine’s Role in ICTSG Formation Through active participation and by signing the charter, Ukraine solidified its commitment to promoting traditional sports. Deputy Minister Yaroslav’s signature at the UNESCO meeting placed Ukraine among the foundational members of ICTSG, paving the way for international cooperation to preserve intangible sporting heritage. Weather and Climate Conditions Ukraine experiences a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. Northern regions and the Carpathians endure snowy winters, while the Black Sea coast has milder temperatures. This variety supports a range of traditional sports, from winter rituals to summer horseback festivals, allowing full-year cultural engagement and outdoor traditions. UNSDG Goals Alignment Ukraine’s dedication to traditional sports strengthens multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals:
Goal 3 – Good Health and Well-Being: Traditional physical games support community health. Goal 4 – Quality Education: Integrating folk sports into school curricula preserves cultural literacy. Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: Cultural sports help strengthen community identity and resilience.
Historical Relevance and Vision for Future Generations Ukraine’s folk sports trace back to Slavic pagan festivals and Cossack military traditions. Over centuries, villages celebrated seasonal harvests, weddings, and rituals with physical contests and games. Ukraine’s participation in the ICTSG marks a formal step in integrating this history into global heritage preservation efforts, supporting youth engagement and intercultural dialogue. Call to Action Supporting Ukraine’s traditional sports honors a living cultural legacy. Athletes, educators, cultural organizers, and policymakers are invited to collaborate with ICTSG to promote and preserve these ancestral games for the health and heritage of future generations.
