Turkmenistan's Foundational Role in ICTSG and Traditional Sports Heritage Overview Turkmenistan was represented at UNESCO’s 4th Collective Consultation Meeting on Traditional Sports and Games in Istanbul on August 13–14, 2018. The delegation was led by Batyr Abdyyev, Head of International Affairs at the Ministry of Sports and Youth Policy. Mr. Abdyyev formally signed the foundational agreement as the official delegate of Turkmenistan, supporting the establishment of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG). Geographic and Cultural Significance Bordered by the Karakum Desert and Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan’s unique landscape has shaped its indigenous sports traditions. Communities living in desert oases and river valleys have developed games that reflect endurance, horsemanship, and communal cooperation, deeply rooted in Turkmen cultural heritage. Traditional and Indigenous Sports of Turkmenistan
Kokpar: A traditional mounted game similar to Central Asian goat-polo, where teams compete to deliver a goat carcass into goal—an iconic symbol of Turkmen horsemanship and strength. Ak Halyk Ukh: A strength competition using heavy poles or weighted ropes, historically performed during festivals to display endurance and solidarity. Archery and Falconry: Showcasing nomadic hunting traditions, Turkmen archers and falconers display their skills during cultural events.
These indigenous games are deeply embedded in the community fabric, teaching values of courage, strategy, and cultural memory. Turkmenistan’s Role in ICTSG Formation By signing the ICTSG charter, Turkmenistan affirmed its dedication to preserving and promoting traditional sports. This participation positioned the country as an early supporter of global cooperation in intangible heritage conservation, and continues to promote youth engagement in cultural sports through educational and governmental programs. Weather and Climate Conditions Turkmenistan has an arid continental climate, with scorching summers and cold winters. Despite extreme temperatures, traditional sports are coordinated seasonally—horseback festivals and Kokpar are held in cooler spring and autumn months, while winter strength contests occur in milder indoor settings. The climate thus shapes the rhythmic pattern of cultural sport traditions. UNSDG Goals Alignment Turkmenistan’s efforts align with key UN Sustainable Development Goals:
Goal 3 – Good Health and Well-Being: Encouraging active lifestyles through traditional sports. Goal 4 – Quality Education: Engaging youth in cultural learning via indigenous sports. Goal 11 – Sustainable Communities: Strengthening social cohesion through heritage-based sports.
Historical Relevance and Legacy Turkmen sports traditions trace back to nomadic ancestry, where horsemanship and endurance shaped daily life and social structures. Games like Kokpar and strength contests were both training and ceremony. With ICTSG membership, Turkmenistan now integrates this ancient legacy into global cultural heritage, ensuring its transmission to future generations through formal structures and international platforms. Call to Action Preserving Turkmenistan’s traditional sports is preserving its soul and national narrative. Citizens, policymakers, educators, and cultural practitioners are urged to support youth involvement and heritage education under ICTSG’s mission. Get Involved Benefits of Joining Support ICTSG
