The Future of Traditional Sports and Games: The Role of ICTSG and World Traditional Sports and Games. Traditional Sports and Games (TSG) have been an essential part of global cultural heritage, passed down through generations as symbols of identity, community, and history. However, modernization, urbanization, and the dominance of mainstream sports have posed significant challenges to their survival. The International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG) has taken a pioneering role in safeguarding, promoting, and revitalizing these games worldwide. A cornerstone of ICTSG’s mission is the establishment and continuous development of the World Traditional Sports and Games (WTSG), which serves as a global platform for celebrating and preserving diverse heritage sports. As societies evolve, TSG continues to play a crucial role in fostering cultural exchange, promoting healthy lifestyles, and reinforcing community values. Unlike commercialized sports, TSG prioritizes inclusivity, sustainability, and cultural authenticity. The integration of TSG into contemporary life ensures that communities retain their unique identities while fostering mutual respect among cultures.Despite their importance, TSG face numerous challenges, including: 1. Declining Participation – Younger generations are increasingly drawn to modern digital entertainment and mainstream sports, leading to reduced engagement in traditional games. 2. Lack of Institutional Support – Many governments and sports federations prioritize Olympic and professional sports, leaving traditional sports underfunded and unrecognized. 3. Commercialization and Cultural Dilution – Some traditional games, when introduced to commercial markets, undergo modifications that strip them of their historical and cultural essence. 4. Limited Media Coverage – Unlike mainstream sports, traditional games receive little to no exposure on major sports networks, limiting their reach and appeal. 5. Absence of Standardized Regulations – Many TSG lack universally accepted rules, making it difficult to organize global competitions. ICTSG has positioned itself as the leading global organization dedicated to the protection, promotion, and sustainability of traditional sports. Its efforts include: 1. The World Traditional Sports and Games (WTSG)The flagship initiative of ICTSG, the World Traditional Sports and Games (WTSG), aims to:● Provide a global platform for showcasing and exchange of traditional sports.● Facilitate cross-cultural interactions and highlight the diversity of sports heritage.● Encourage international participation by engaging indigenous groups, governments, and sports organizations.● Promote sustainability by preserving the historical authenticity of traditional games while integrating them into modern sports policies.WTSG is envisioned as a multidimensional event, featuring not only competitions but also cultural exhibitions, academic conferences, and policy discussions to strengthen the global movement for TSG. 2. Policy and Governance Framework for TSGICTSG is actively working with UNESCO, national governments, and cultural institutions to create legally binding frameworks for the protection of traditional sports. This includes:● Integrating TSG into national sports policies.● Recognizing TSG as part of Intangible Cultural Heritage, ensuring their safeguarding for future generations.● Establishing governance structures that allow indigenous and local communities to lead efforts in preserving their own traditional games. 3. Education and Capacity BuildingA sustainable future for TSG requires investing in education and capacity building. ICTSG is engaged in developing educational programs that integrate traditional sports into school curricula. Training local coaches and referees to ensure the authenticity and continuation of traditional games. Encouraging universities and research institutions to conduct studies on the impact of TSG on social cohesion, health, and heritage preservation. 4. Technological Integration and Media OutreachTo engage modern audiences, ICTSG is leveraging technology and media to promote traditional sports. Key initiatives include Digital documentation of traditional sports, ensuring their accessibility worldwide. Live streaming and broadcasting of WTSG and other TSG events to global audiences. Mobile apps and e-learning platforms for educating individuals on the rules, history, and significance of traditional sports. 5. Strengthening International CollaborationICTSG collaborates with UNESCO's Member States, Sports Ministries, and Cultural Organizations to:Develop bilateral and multilateral agreements that promote traditional sports at international forums. Facilitate cultural exchanges and sports diplomacy through traditional games. Advocate for traditional sports’ inclusion in global sporting events such as the MINEPS, and regional multi-sport festivals. The future of TSG, under ICTSG’s leadership, envisions:● Global recognition and institutionalization of traditional sports as an essential part of cultural identity.● Greater funding and investment in TSG initiatives by governments, NGOs, and private sectors.● Increased participation of youth and women, ensuring inclusivity and sustainability.● Integration of TSG in urban and modern sports structures, making them accessible to wider demographics. The preservation and growth of Traditional Sports and Games depend on collective efforts at local, national, and international levels. With ICTSG’s strategic vision and the success of the World Traditional Sports and Games (WTSG), TSG has the potential to not only survive but thrive in the 21st century. By blending tradition with innovation, TSG can continue to serve as symbols of unity, heritage, and identity for future generations. By: ZKE-Mail: zkkhan@colostate.edu
