On behalf of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG) and its global network of national chapters, member federations, and traditional sports practitioners, President Khalil Ahmed Khan extends his warmest greetings to all on the occasion of the New Year 2021.
The year 2020 was an unprecedented year for the world. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted sport, culture, and social life on a global scale. Traditional sports and games - which require no specialized infrastructure and are deeply rooted in community life - emerged as powerful tools for mental well-being, social cohesion, and cultural continuity during this period of isolation.
ICTSG used 2020 to advance its documentation and policy work, including the historic signing of the MOU with the Government of Mongolia, the hosting of the World Ministerial Virtual Conference on Traditional Sports and Games (WMVC), and continued engagement with UNESCO and the United Nations on the recognition of TSG as essential components of intangible cultural heritage.
As we enter 2021, ICTSG reaffirms its commitment to:
- Accelerating documentation of endangered traditional sports before they are lost - Advancing the SRETS Elevation Framework to guide sports from grassroots to international recognition - Supporting the World Indigenous Games and regional championship initiatives - Expanding national chapters and member federations across all continents - Pursuing formal recognition of August 14 as the International Day of Traditional Sports and Games
We extend our gratitude to all governments, UNESCO, partner organizations, and traditional sports communities worldwide who have supported our mission. The games of our ancestors are the heritage of our children.
Wishing all a prosperous and active New Year 2021.
Khalil Ahmed Khan President, International Council of Traditional Sports and Games
"When a sport disappears, it is like a language no longer spoken. When we revive a game, we revive a culture."
Khalil Ahmed Khan — President, ICTSG
