As a member of the Research and Publication Commission of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG), he brings invaluable regional expertise, academic insight, and a lifelong passion for indigenous knowledge and traditional play. With a professional background in education and community development, Mr. Mwigaya has worked at the intersection of heritage preservation and youth empowerment, developing inclusive strategies to safeguard endangered traditional games and pass them on to future generations. His work represents a strong voice for the African perspective in global TSG discourse. Mr. Mwigaya has been instrumental in identifying, documenting, and revitalizing indigenous games of Tanzania, such as bao, kalaha, mchezo wa rede, kuruka kamba, and various indigenous wrestling and stick-fighting styles. He collaborates with local schools, elders, and cultural centers to ensure traditional games are reintroduced into community life and integrated into school co-curricular activities. Advocates for the East African cultural heritage through participation in national and regional forums that highlight the value of TSG in promoting identity, peace, and intergenerational cohesion. Promotes TSG as a tool for fostering pan-African unity and resilience in the face of globalization. As a member of the Research and Publication Commission, Mr. Mwigaya plays a critical role in supporting ICTSG’s mandate to safeguard Traditional Sports and Games as part of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage. His responsibilities include: Research and Documentation: Leading efforts to catalogue traditional Tanzanian and East African games for inclusion in global heritage databases. Curriculum Development: Supporting ICTSG’s goal of integrating TSG into educational systems by contributing to learning modules, training manuals, and research frameworks. Field Studies and Oral Histories: Coordinating field-based research to collect oral traditions, gameplay rules, and cultural meanings from village elders and local practitioners. Publications and Dissemination: Contributing articles, reports, and case studies to ICTSG publications and academic journals that highlight Africa’s rich TSG legacy. Mr. Mwigaya champions the vision of a culturally rooted and inclusive global sports movement. He envisions TSG as vital to: Preserving cultural identity in African youth. Supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through education, gender equality, peace-building, and community health.
