The Union of African Traditional Sports and Games (UATSG) in coordination with the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG) organized a ministerial webinar on the safeguarding and promotion of traditional sports and games in Africa on June 17, 2021.
The webinar brought together Ministers of Sport, Culture and Youth from across the African continent to discuss common frameworks for protecting and developing traditional sports and games as part of Africa's living cultural heritage.
Key discussions centered on the establishment of standardized documentation frameworks for African traditional sports, integration of traditional games into school curricula, and the coordination of future continental championships. The UATSG presented its roadmap for promoting at least one African traditional sport to inclusion in the World Traditional Games by 2030.
ICTSG President Khalil Ahmed Khan addressed the ministers, highlighting the SRETS (Safeguarding, Revitalization, Elevation of Traditional Sports) Framework as a pathway for African traditional sports to achieve international recognition while maintaining their cultural authenticity.
Representatives from the African Union Commission and UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Offices in Abuja and Nairobi also participated, reaffirming the institutional support for ICTSG and UATSG's joint mission to document, preserve, and promote Africa's extraordinary diversity of traditional sports and games.
The webinar concluded with a commitment from participating nations to coordinate their national TSG documentation efforts and to support the inaugural African Traditional Sports and Games Championship planned for Namibia in 2026.
"When a sport disappears, it is like a language no longer spoken. When we revive a game, we revive a culture."
Khalil Ahmed Khan — President, ICTSG
