Personal Profile: Mr. Finn Berggren - Official Coordinator (Europe)Hello! I’m Finn Berggren—a steward of Nordic heritage, an educator, and a lifelong advocate for the power of Traditional Sports and Games (TSG) to connect generations and cultures. As ICTSG’s Official Coordinator in Europe and Head of Denmark’s Gerlev Academy, I’ve spent nearly two decades weaving the threads of history, play, and community into a vibrant tapestry of cultural revival. My journey began in 2006 with the UNESCO TSG Project, where I first championed the idea that games like kubb (Viking chess) or Danish longball aren’t just relics—they’re living classrooms. At Gerlev Academy, Scandinavia’s hub for TSG innovation, I’ve trained educators, revived forgotten Nordic sports, and designed programs that turn playgrounds into portals to the past. (Fun fact: Our “Viking Games” summer camp once hosted 500 participants reenacting historic challenges—axe-throwing included. Spoiler: No axes were harmed!)From 2017 to 2019, I deepened this work as a member of UNESCO’s Advisory Committee on TSG, advising global policymakers on safeguarding intangible heritage. But for me, true progress happens on the ground. Whether leading a klootschieten (traditional Frisian bowling) workshop in the Netherlands or collaborating with Sami communities to preserve reindeer racing, I believe TSG thrives when we listen to elders and empower youth.Beyond strategy sessions, I’m a storyteller. My office at Gerlev doubles as a museum of oddities—think 18th-century Danish dice and hand-carved Greenlandic ajagaq (Inuit coordination games). When I’m not lecturing or drafting policy, you’ll find me foraging mushrooms in Zealand’s forests or competing in långfärdsskridsko (long-distance ice skating), a meditative sport that reminds me resilience is a Nordic superpower. As the Danish proverb goes: “A good heritage is the best inheritance.” I carry this wisdom into every effort to ensure TSG isn’t just preserved but reimagined—as tools for education, social inclusion, and joy in an increasingly digital world.Let’s roll the dice of history together—and play our way to a more connected future.Social Media:Linkedin: Facebook
