The International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG) wishes to express its deep solidarity with all communities around the world facing the unprecedented challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In these difficult times, ICTSG recognizes the unique role that traditional sports and games can play in maintaining physical and mental health within communities forced into isolation. Unlike modern sports that require specialized facilities, traditional games can be adapted for household and neighborhood play, maintaining their function as tools for social cohesion, community bonding, and healthy lifestyles.
ICTSG President Khalil Ahmed Khan stated: "Traditional sports and games have always been the sports of the people - played without expensive infrastructure, accessible to all ages and backgrounds. During this time of global health crisis, we urge communities to rediscover their indigenous games at home and in their neighborhoods, adapting them to maintain physical activity and strengthen family bonds."
The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated how easily modern life can be disrupted, while communities with strong roots in traditional culture - including traditional sports and games - often show greater resilience and social cohesion. ICTSG calls upon its national chapters, member federations, and partners to document and share how their communities are adapting traditional sports practices during the pandemic.
ICTSG remains committed to its mission of safeguarding and promoting traditional sports and games for the benefit of all humanity, and looks forward to a time when communities around the world can once again gather freely to celebrate their cultural sporting heritage.
We extend our heartfelt wishes for the health and safety of all communities during this global crisis.
"When a sport disappears, it is like a language no longer spoken. When we revive a game, we revive a culture."
Khalil Ahmed Khan — President, ICTSG
