The Union of African Traditional Sports and Games (UATSG) in collaboration with UNESCO Regional Offices in Africa has initiated a project for the research and dissemination of African traditional sports and games.
In a follow-up to the African Union's Agenda 2063, the UATSG and UNESCO Africa have collaborated to gather TSG experts in order to establish mutual and stronger partnerships between the governmental and non-governmental organizations along with ensuring documentation and standardization of traditional sports and games in Africa.
The collaboration brings together researchers, cultural heritage specialists, and sports governance professionals from across the continent to build a comprehensive framework for documenting African traditional sports. This framework aims to:
- Standardize documentation methodologies for African traditional sports and games - Establish criteria for validating community-driven preservation efforts - Build capacity among national sports authorities to integrate TSG into policy frameworks - Create a continental database of African traditional sports accessible to researchers and policymakers
The project represents a significant step in UATSG's mission to ensure that at least one African traditional sport achieves standardization and inclusion in the World Traditional Games by 2030, as committed to by UATSG Secretary General Chief Michael Shamsu Mustapha.
"When a sport disappears, it is like a language no longer spoken. When we revive a game, we revive a culture."
Khalil Ahmed Khan — President, ICTSG
