Preserving Cultural Roots: The Vital Role of Regional Traditional Sports and Games under ICTSG In a rapidly globalizing world, cultural identities often risk fading into obscurity. Among the most vivid expressions of cultural heritage are Traditional Sports and Games (TSG)—practices that carry the soul of a people, the rhythm of a region, and the values of generations past. Under the visionary leadership of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG), the world is witnessing a powerful resurgence of these regional treasures, recognized not merely as recreational pastimes but as essential pillars of intangible cultural heritage. Regional TSG are more than sports—they are storytelling traditions, reflections of regional wisdom, and expressions of ecological adaptation. Whether it's Kabaddi in South Asia, Capoeira in Brazil, or Mongolian wrestling, these games foster local pride, physical wellness, intergenerational dialogue, and community cohesion. Preserving and promoting these sports ensures the safeguarding of indigenous knowledge systems and cultural identities in their most dynamic forms. They serve as vehicles of education, peace, and solidarity—resonating deeply with UNESCO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The ICTSG provides an inclusive global platform where regional games are given international voice and recognition. It does so by: Mapping and documenting endangered TSG at regional levels. Organizing regional forums and games festivals to showcase local traditions. Collaborating with UNESCO Member States and indigenous communities for the revival and promotion of regional sports. Supporting policy integration of TSG into education, health, and youth development frameworks. Promoting research and documentation, including regional lexicons, techniques, and historical origins. Through ICTSG, regional games are not only preserved but also reimagined for modern contexts, making them accessible to younger generations through schools, digital platforms, and social initiatives. Every traditional sport is a thread in the vast tapestry of humanity’s shared heritage. By championing regional TSG, ICTSG nurtures cultural diversity while fostering global solidarity. These games become platforms for intercultural dialogue, gender equity, and sustainable development—aligning closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From the grassroots to the global stage, regional TSG have the power to inspire peace, environmental consciousness, and social equity. They connect people to their land, their ancestors, and to each other. As the custodian of Traditional Sports and Games, the ICTSG invites all nations, organizations, and communities to: Recognize regional games as national assets. Support community-led revival efforts. Integrate TSG into school curricula and youth development programs. Preserve oral traditions, rituals, and environments linked to these sports. Celebrate August 14th—the International Day of Traditional Sports and Games—with pride and participation. Regional Traditional Sports and Games are living embodiments of heritage, and under the stewardship of ICTSG, they are emerging as tools of unity, education, and peace. Let us champion them—not as relics of the past, but as vital forces shaping the present and future. Through every local game, we reconnect with our roots and reaffirm our place in the global family. Together, let us safeguard, celebrate, and share these cultural treasures—region by region, game by game.
"When a sport disappears, it is like a language no longer spoken. When we revive a game, we revive a culture."
Khalil Ahmed Khan — President, ICTSG
