A meeting of African sports Ministers, UNESCO Permanent Delegations and government officials from Africa was organized in August 2018 at the sidelines of the 4th UNESCO Collective Consultation Meeting 2018.
The Meeting was chaired by Mr. Paulin Danho, Minister of Youth and Sports of Cote d'Ivoire along with Hon. Hadrammeh Sidibeh, Minister of Youth and Sport of The Gambia and Mr. Khalil Ahmed Khan, President of ICTSG.
The gathering brought together African government stakeholders to advance the promotion and safeguarding of traditional sports and games across the continent, building on the momentum of the 4th Collective Consultation held in Istanbul, Turkey, which formally endorsed the establishment of ICTSG and approved its statutes.
The African ministerial meeting was an important step in strengthening regional governance of traditional sports, recognizing Africa's extraordinary diversity of indigenous sporting heritage and the urgent need to document and protect these games before they are lost to modernization.
"When a sport disappears, it is like a language no longer spoken. When we revive a game, we revive a culture."
Khalil Ahmed Khan — President, ICTSG
