Croatia’s Role in the ICTSG Formation Croatia proudly took part in the 4th Collective Consultation Meeting on Traditional Sports and Games (TSG) held on 13–14 August 2018 at the Sheraton Grand Istanbul Atasehir, Turkey. Represented officially by Mr. Boris Filipovic Grcic, President of Alka of Sinj, Croatia formally contributed to the formation of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG), aligning with UNESCO’s goals for safeguarding living heritage. Overview of Croatia Croatia is a Central European and Mediterranean country renowned for its deep cultural roots and historical traditions. Bordering Slovenia, Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia, and boasting a long coastline along the Adriatic Sea, Croatia is home to rich biodiversity and ancient cultural traditions passed down for generations. Geographic Significance Strategically located at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe, Croatia acts as a cultural and historical bridge between East and West. Its varied geography — from the Dinaric Alps to the Dalmatian coast — nurtures diverse ecosystems and traditions. This unique setting has allowed the flourishing of numerous traditional sports and games rooted in both continental and maritime heritage. Traditional Sports and Indigenous Games of Croatia
Alka of Sinj: A UNESCO-inscribed equestrian competition dating back to 1715, the Alka celebrates victory against Ottoman invaders. Participants in traditional uniforms ride horses at full gallop aiming lances at a small metal ring. Alka is held annually in Sinj and symbolizes honor, bravery, and Croatian identity. Boćanje (Croatian Bocce): Played widely along the coast, this is a traditional ball sport requiring skill and precision. It has been a social pastime for centuries, often enjoyed in village squares and coastal towns. Wrestling and Highland Games: Especially in rural and mountainous regions, traditional wrestling styles and strength-based contests have survived through folk festivals and national celebrations.
Historical Role in ICTSG Formation As one of the 40+ nations present at the 2018 UNESCO-led consultation, Croatia contributed significantly through its cultural delegate, Mr. Boris Filipovic Grcic. His official endorsement on behalf of Croatia lent credibility to ICTSG’s mission. Croatia’s recognition of Alka of Sinj as a heritage game demonstrated its commitment to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. This historical endorsement cements Croatia’s continuing role in shaping ICTSG policy and cultural alignment. Weather and Climate Croatia enjoys a varied climate — Mediterranean along the coast and continental inland. Coastal regions like Split and Dubrovnik experience mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. Inland cities such as Zagreb and Osijek have more pronounced seasonal changes, with snowy winters and warm summers. These conditions influence the style and scheduling of traditional games like Alka, which is best held during warm months to accommodate horses, riders, and spectators safely and comfortably. Alignment with UN SDGs Croatia’s participation in ICTSG aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Through cultural preservation and education, it supports:
Goal 4: Quality Education – by promoting traditional sports as cultural knowledge. Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – by keeping heritage sports part of urban and rural identities. Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals – through global collaboration under ICTSG’s framework.
Historical Relevance for ICTSG’s Future Croatia's rich cultural archives, such as the centuries-old records of Alka and other folk traditions, provide a roadmap for future initiatives of ICTSG. Museums, universities, and traditional sports associations in Croatia are already working collaboratively to digitize, preserve, and share knowledge globally. Croatia is uniquely positioned to act as a regional hub for education, mentorship, and heritage-based development within ICTSG’s evolving landscape. Get Involved Benefits of Joining Support ICTSG
