State of Qatar at the 4th Collective Consultation on Traditional Sports and Games The State of Qatar, under the representation of H.E. Mr. Saleh bin Ghanem Al Ali, Minister of Culture and Sports, actively participated in the landmark 4th Collective Consultation Meeting on Traditional Sports and Games. Held in Istanbul, Türkiye, on 13th and 14th August 2018, this event was organized by the Adhoc Advisory Committee on Traditional Sports and Games and hosted by the Ministry of Sports and the World Ethnosport Confederation (WEC). Qatar’s presence marked its commitment to cultural heritage and indigenous identity within the global sporting community. Geographic and Strategic Importance of Qatar Qatar is a small but highly strategic nation located in the Arabian Peninsula, bordering the Persian Gulf. Its geographic location has historically made it a center for cultural exchange and traditional practices. From desert-adapted sports to maritime traditions, Qatar's indigenous identity is deeply tied to its geography and desert climate. Qatar’s Role in the Formation of ICTSG Qatar's representation at the Istanbul consultation reaffirms its dedication to the global recognition and institutionalization of traditional sports. As a participating member, Qatar supported the formation of the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG), a global body endorsed by UNESCO to preserve intangible cultural heritage. The presence of a ministerial-level representative elevated the significance of Qatar’s endorsement. Read more about the ICTSG formation here. Traditional and Indigenous Sports of Qatar
Al Hejin (Camel Racing): Known for centuries in Bedouin culture, this sport is a national pride, blending heritage and modern technology. Falconry: Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, falconry has deep roots in Qatar’s desert culture. Sword Dancing (Ardha): A traditional group performance involving poetry, drums, and swordplay, often performed at national celebrations.
Weather and Climate Conditions in Qatar Qatar features a desert climate with hot, arid summers and mild winters. The weather influences the timing and nature of traditional games, which are often held during the cooler months. The climate also shaped the development of sports such as sand dune racing and water-based pearl diving competitions in the past. UNSDG Alignment Qatar’s efforts in preserving traditional sports align with multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:
Goal 4: Quality Education – Through cultural education programs tied to heritage sports. Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – By promoting inclusive community activities through heritage games. Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions – Cultural sports serve as peace-building tools across diverse communities.
Historical Relevance for Future Generations By participating in UNESCO’s consultation and endorsing the formation of ICTSG, Qatar cemented its legacy as a torchbearer of intangible cultural heritage in the Middle East. Its rich traditions in desert and maritime sports continue to inspire youth to reconnect with ancestral practices. These actions ensure a sustainable future for traditional sports beyond the modern arena. Call to Action Qatar invites researchers, athletes, and cultural enthusiasts to join hands in preserving, promoting, and participating in the nation’s traditional sports and heritage games.
