Sierra Leone’s Commitment to Traditional Sports and ICTSG Overview Sierra Leone, a vibrant West African nation, participated in the UNESCO‑organized 4th Collective Consultation Meeting on Traditional Sports and Games in Istanbul, Turkey, on August 13–14, 2018. The delegation was led by Michael Shamsu Mustapha, Director of Sports, alongside Mr. Ishmael Suma. Mr. Mustapha formally signed the founding document as representative of the Ministry of Sports of Sierra Leone, cementing the country’s role in establishing the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG). National Chapter President: Mr.Alie Kamara
Geographic and Cultural Importance Sierra Leone’s landscape ranges from Atlantic coastline to mangrove swamps and inland hills, nurturing both river‑based and land‑based traditional sports. These geographic features have shaped community-centered games and reinforced cultural bonds across diverse ethnic groups. Traditional and Indigenous Sports of Sierra Leone
Traditional Boat Racing: Seasonal canoe races in coastal villages emphasize teamwork, rhythm, and heritage linked to centuries of river navigation. Village Wrestling (Gbomah): A powerful one‑on‑one rural contest, symbolizing strength, local pride, and unity during community celebrations. Traditional Stick‑Fighting (Gbandu): Ritualized stick tournaments rooted in indigenous conflict resolution and ceremonial traditions.
These traditional sports express Sierra Leone’s cultural identity and promote social cohesion through intergenerational transmission and communal participation. Role in ICTSG Formation By signing the founding document at the UNESCO meeting, Sierra Leone showed strong commitment to the goals of ICTSG. Under Michael Shamsu Mustapha’s leadership, the country joined other nations in forming a united front dedicated to preserving traditional sports and integrating cultural heritage into sporting diplomacy and educational initiatives. Weather and Climate Conditions Sierra Leone has a tropical monsoon climate with a rainy season from May to November and a cool, dry Harmattan season from December to April. Coastal areas remain warm year-round, while inland regions cool slightly. These seasonally dynamic conditions support water‑based sports like boat racing during calm dry months and wrestling festivals during cooler inland periods, enabling diverse cultural engagement throughout the year. UNSDG Goals Alignment Sierra Leone’s cultural sports align with several UN Sustainable Development Goals:
Goal 3 – Good Health and Well‑Being: Traditional sports promote physical activity and mental wellness in communities. Goal 4 – Quality Education: Including indigenous sports in educational curricula preserves cultural knowledge. Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: Supporting heritage sports strengthens resilient and culturally inclusive communities.
Historical Relevance and Future Vision Sierra Leone’s cultural heritage is deeply shaped by coastal trade and village ceremonies. Boat racing emerged from maritime necessity, while wrestling and stick-fighting symbolized social order and rite of passage. Today, Sierra Leone’s participation in ICTSG signals a renewed commitment to revitalize these traditions on international platforms, ensuring they thrive for future generations. Call to Action Preserving Sierra Leone’s traditional sports is preserving its soul and community. We invite athletes, educators, policy makers, and culture enthusiasts to support the nation’s journey in safeguarding and promoting these vital traditions through ICTSG.
