Morocco's Role in the Formation of ICTSG Overview of Morocco Located in North Africa, Morocco is a nation that bridges Africa and Europe through its cultural, historical, and geographic richness. Known for its unique traditions, Morocco blends Berber, Arab, and French influences, making it a thriving hub of heritage and sports. With Rabat as its capital and Casablanca as its economic powerhouse, Morocco plays a vital role in the Maghreb region. Participation at UNESCO 4th Collective Consultation on TSG Morocco was officially represented at the 4th Collective Consultation Meeting on Traditional Sports and Games held on 13th & 14th August 2018 in Istanbul, Turkey. Mrs. Karima El Khomry, on behalf of the Ministry of Sports of the Kingdom of Morocco, signed the official documentation and participated in deliberations concerning the future of traditional sports globally. The event took place at the Sheraton Grand Istanbul Atasehir and was organized by the Adhoc Advisory Committee on TSG, hosted by the World Ethnosport Confederation and UNESCO member states. Geographical Importance of Morocco Strategically located with access to both the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, Morocco serves as a cultural and trade bridge between Africa and Europe. This unique positioning allows it to promote cultural diplomacy through traditional sports exchanges. Its varied terrain includes the Atlas Mountains, Sahara Desert, and coastal plains—each fostering distinct local games and sports traditions. Traditional and Indigenous Sports in Morocco

Fantasia: An equestrian performance that dates back centuries, celebrating military traditions and community festivals. It involves synchronized horse riding and gunpowder firing, showcasing strength, coordination, and heritage. Moussem Festivals: Regional gatherings where traditional wrestling, camel racing, and horseback games are conducted to honor saints or local leaders. Moroccan Wrestling (El-Mahraz): Practiced in rural areas, this indigenous wrestling style promotes physical strength and moral values.

Historical Role in the Creation of ICTSG Morocco’s endorsement during the 2018 Istanbul consultation was pivotal. The country's representation by the Ministry of Sports highlights its strategic vision to preserve and promote traditional games. Morocco stood with over 40 countries to support the formation of ICTSG as an independent platform under the UNESCO framework. Read more on the official ICTSG formation history. Weather and Climate Conditions Morocco experiences a diverse climate due to its geography. The northern coastal areas enjoy a Mediterranean climate, while the interior is characterized by continental and arid conditions. The southern part includes portions of the Sahara Desert with hot, dry weather. These variations support different types of sports—coastal water games in the north and desert sports like camel racing in the south. UN SDG Goals Alignment Morocco’s cultural preservation through traditional sports aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

Goal 4 – Quality Education: TSGs are integrated into community education programs to transmit heritage. Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities & Communities: Urban sports facilities and traditional event spaces foster community engagement. Goal 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Morocco’s collaboration through ICTSG and UNESCO ensures international cooperation.

Historical Relevance and Future Contributions As a guardian of North African traditions, Morocco has long contributed to the cultural narrative of the region. Its practices, like Fantasia, are more than performances—they are social institutions. The government’s active participation in ICTSG lays the groundwork for more structured youth programs, intercultural sports exchanges, and the preservation of endangered games. Call to Action Morocco invites scholars, youth, educators, and practitioners to join the ICTSG initiative. Together, we can preserve traditional Moroccan sports and inspire future generations to respect and engage with their cultural roots. Get Involved   Benefits of Joining   Support ICTSG
