Tanzania: A Cultural Beacon in Traditional Sports and Games Tanzania, a culturally vibrant nation in East Africa, is home to a rich diversity of ethnic groups, traditions, and heritage sports. As a participant at the UNESCO’s 4th Collective Consultation Meeting on Traditional Sports and Games held on 13–14 August 2018 in Istanbul, Turkey, Tanzania solidified its commitment to the global recognition and preservation of traditional games. Represented by Abdullah Mtolea and Mrs. Elazabith Kiondo, the Ambassador of Tanzania in Turkey, Tanzania played a critical role in shaping the vision for the International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG).
Key Participation in UNESCO’s 4th TSG Meeting The 2018 meeting hosted by the Adhoc Advisory Committee on TSG and the Ministry of Sports at the Sheraton Grand Istanbul Ataşehir marked a turning point in global traditional sports governance. Tanzania was represented officially by Member of Parliament Abdullah Mtolea, showcasing national commitment at a parliamentary level. The presence of Ambassador Kiondo signified governmental support and diplomatic engagement.
Geographic Importance of Tanzania Located along the eastern coastline of Africa, Tanzania is bordered by eight countries and the Indian Ocean. Its geographic diversity—from Mount Kilimanjaro to the Serengeti—provides an array of terrains where traditional games have evolved over centuries. Tanzania’s position makes it a central cultural hub in Sub-Saharan Africa, ideal for fostering regional collaboration in preserving indigenous sports.
Traditional and Indigenous Sports in Tanzania Tanzania boasts several traditional games deeply embedded in its community life. One prominent example is Bao, a strategic board game passed through generations in East Africa, played with small stones and carved boards. Another culturally significant activity is Msaragambo, a youth-centered combat dance practiced in rural areas of the southern highlands. These sports not only entertain but also educate and build community cohesion.
Tanzania’s Role in ICTSG Foundation Tanzania’s involvement in the historic 2018 UNESCO meeting helped catalyze the formal formation of ICTSG. Through the parliamentary support of Mr. Mtolea and the diplomatic presence of Mrs. Kiondo, the country became a critical voice in advocating for long-term strategies to safeguard intangible cultural heritage. This leadership resonates with Tanzania’s national vision of cultural preservation and youth development.
Weather and Climate of Tanzania Tanzania has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The coastal regions experience hot and humid weather, while the highlands enjoy cooler temperatures. This variation creates conducive environments for outdoor traditional sports throughout the year. The consistent seasonal cycles also allow for community festivals and sports gatherings, maintaining cultural continuity.
UN Sustainable Development Goals Alignment Tanzania’s traditional sports initiatives align closely with several UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). These include:
Goal 4: Quality Education – By embedding traditional games in the school curriculum. Goal 5: Gender Equality – Promoting inclusive participation in heritage sports. Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – Preserving cultural practices through community-based sports events.
These alignments reflect Tanzania’s commitment to not only preserving heritage but also using it as a developmental tool for inclusive, equitable societies.
Historical Relevance and Legacy Historically, Tanzanian communities have relied on sports as mediums of conflict resolution, storytelling, and community building. This legacy made the nation a natural advocate for institutionalizing traditional sports at the international level. Through its support at the 4th Consultation Meeting, Tanzania paved the way for regional cooperation and the digitization of traditional sports knowledge for future generations.
