August 14, 2025 marked a watershed moment in the global movement for traditional sports and games. The International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG) led the world's largest coordinated celebration of traditional sporting heritage, uniting governments, UNESCO delegations, indigenous communities, civil society, and sports federations under a single declaration of intent.
The Landmark TSG Day 2025 Global Declaration
The centrepiece of this year's celebration was the unanimous adoption of the TSGDAY 2025 Global Declaration, formally approved in the presence of the ICTSG President, senior leadership, member state representatives, and international stakeholders. The Declaration affirms that traditional sports and games are an irreplaceable dimension of intangible cultural heritage, essential for sustainable development, intercultural dialogue, and the well-being of communities.
The Declaration calls on governments worldwide to integrate traditional sports and games into national education curricula, heritage protection frameworks, and sports development budgets. It further calls on international organisations, including UNESCO and the United Nations, to elevate TSG in intergovernmental policy dialogues.
Formation of the ICTSG Women's Committee
A defining milestone of TSG Day 2025 was the formal establishment of the ICTSG Women's Committee, dedicated to expanding leadership opportunities for women in the global TSG movement. The Committee, led by Ms. Mona Almahr as an inaugural member, is tasked with creating inclusive platforms, encouraging female participation across all TSG disciplines, and ensuring equal representation in ICTSG's policy-making and governance structures.
"Women have always been central to the transmission of traditional games across generations," said ICTSG President Khalil Ahmed Khan. "The formation of this Committee is our commitment to placing their leadership at the heart of our mission."
Global Celebrations
Countries across every continent celebrated TSG Day 2025 with community festivals, inter-school TSG competitions, live demonstrations of heritage games, and cultural exhibitions. In West Africa, wrestling tournaments drew thousands of spectators. In the Pacific, outrigger canoe races honoured maritime traditions. In South Asia, kabaddi tournaments gathered inter-village teams. In Europe, glima and chidaoba demonstrations attracted international media attention.
Online engagement surpassed all previous years, with the ICTSG's digital platforms receiving over 2 million views across social media channels during the 24-hour global celebration.
Technology and the Future of TSG
A special session on TSG Day 2025 explored the role of extended reality (XR), augmented reality (AR), and immersive media in preserving and promoting traditional sports. Expert speakers guided the ICTSG community on integrating heritage sports into digital experiences — from virtual museums of traditional games to metaverse arenas hosting ancient competitions — ensuring that TSG remains relevant for digitally native generations while preserving cultural authenticity.
The day concluded with a reaffirmation: traditional sports and games are not relics of the past. They are living, evolving expressions of human identity, community, and resilience — and ICTSG stands as their unwavering global custodian.
"When a sport disappears, it is like a language no longer spoken. When we revive a game, we revive a culture."
Khalil Ahmed Khan — President, ICTSG
