Sports Diplomacy – A Bridge Between Nations The International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG) regards sports diplomacy as one of the most impactful instruments for advancing peace, intercultural understanding, and cooperation among peoples and nations. Where policies may differ, and borders may divide, the universal language of sport—especially traditional and indigenous games—can inspire trust, respect, and meaningful engagement. “In times when little else can unite us, traditional sports and games remind us of our shared humanity.” – ICTSG Statement on Cultural Unity, 2024 Why Sports Diplomacy? Throughout history, traditional games have carried with them the values of inclusion, respect, teamwork, and joy. In modern geopolitics, they offer a unique and non-political tool to:

Foster dialogue between diverse communities Bridge generational and cultural gaps Support reconciliation and healing in post-conflict regions Enhance people-to-people diplomacy beyond official state channels Connect national identity with global citizenship

ICTSG strongly believes that the spirit of play knows no passport—and that each traditional game is a cultural bridge, woven from shared heritage and mutual aspiration. Our Diplomatic Pathways ICTSG’s sports diplomacy is practiced through:

International Friendship Events – non-competitive festivals featuring traditional games from multiple regions Ministerial Dialogues – hosted in collaboration with national sports and culture ministries Intercultural Panels and Podcasts – where community leaders, youth, and athletes reflect on heritage, unity, and cooperation Women in TSG Initiatives – promoting inclusivity as part of our peace agenda UN SDG Integration – especially in goals related to SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions

A Non-Political, Peace-Oriented Commitment ICTSG maintains a fully apolitical stance, and our work in sports diplomacy is grounded in the values of mutual respect, cultural dignity, and peaceful coexistence. We do not endorse any political narratives, nor do we seek to influence state policy. Our goal is simple but powerful: to enable individuals, communities, and governments to connect through shared traditions, to celebrate differences, and to discover common ground through play. Sports Diplomacy in Action
