Gender Equality at ICTSG The International Council of Traditional Sports and Games (ICTSG) recognizes the universal importance of gender equality as an essential pillar of inclusive development, cultural preservation, and sustainable peace. Rooted in the shared heritage of humanity, traditional sports and games have long served as platforms for connection, learning, and mutual respect across generations—and across genders. Approach ICTSG’s approach to gender equality is guided by the principles of:

Respect for cultural diversity while ensuring dignity and opportunity for all individuals Non-discrimination in any form, including gender, ability, background, or social context Evidence-based elevation of traditional games that historically include or empower women and girls Constructive dialogue with member countries and communities to promote inclusion at all levels

We acknowledge that traditional games often reflect deeply embedded social practices. Rather than imposing external frameworks, ICTSG promotes collaborative engagement—ensuring that gender inclusion is both culturally grounded and globally resonant. What We Do In alignment with SDG 5: Gender Equality, ICTSG works through the following strategic actions:

Documenting women’s roles in traditional games across continents—players, coaches, artisans, and organizers Supporting inclusive policy formulation within sports ministries, heritage commissions, and partner organizations Creating leadership opportunities within ICTSG for women and underrepresented voices Publishing features and oral histories through our “Women in TSG” initiative Collaborating with youth and education sectors to promote gender-balanced access to traditional play

These efforts are designed not only to elevate recognition for women in traditional sports, but to ensure the sustainability of the games themselves through broader participation and cultural vitality. Inclusivity Without Exception ICTSG operates without political bias, institutional prejudice, or cultural presumption. Our commitment to gender equity is grounded in dialogue, mutual respect, and ethical advancement. We support practices that emerge from communities and evolve with their participation. We acknowledge the unique frameworks, cultural sensitivities, and governance models of each member nation. ICTSG maintains full respect for sovereign traditions and seeks to partner with all entities—governmental, educational, or community-based—to find constructive and respectful paths toward inclusive growth.
