Calcio Storico – Florence’s Historic Sport of Strength and Tradition Calcio Storico Fiorentino, also known as Calcio in Costume or Giuoco del Calcio Fiorentino, is a traditional sport originating in Florence, Italy. Combining elements of football, rugby, wrestling, and historical reenactment, it is deeply rooted in Florentine culture and symbolizes bravery and defiance. Historical Background Calcio Storico dates back to at least 37 BC and has been a defining tradition in Florence for centuries. One of the most significant historical matches took place on February 17, 1530, during the Siege of Florence, where Florentines played the game as an act of resistance against imperial forces. Gameplay and Rules
Each team consists of 27 players. Players can only represent the district they were born in. The game is played on a sand-covered field measuring approximately 100m × 50m. Matches last 50 minutes with no substitutions. Teams field:
Four datori indietro (goalkeepers) Three datori innanzi (fullbacks) Five sconciatori (halfbacks) Fifteen innanzi or corridori (forwards)
The game begins with the pallaio throwing and kicking the ball toward the center line. The 15 forwards engage in a mixed martial arts-style fight. Players can use both hands and feet to play. A goal, called a caccia, is scored by throwing the ball over the designated spot at the end of the field. Teams switch sides after each caccia. If a player misses the spot, the opposing team receives half a point (mezza caccia). Kicking or throwing the ball above the net also awards the opposing team a half caccia. The team with the most cacce after 50 minutes wins. A referee and six linesmen officiate the match, overseen by a judge commissioner. Players are identified by symbols rather than numbers, including lion, pear, key, horn, star, and dragon.
