Mr.Abdul Hameed, Director of National Sports Afghanistan’s represent the country. Afghanistan's presence indicated strong alignment with UNESCO’s vision for preserving traditional knowledge through sport. Overview of Afghanistan Afghanistan is a landlocked country at the heart of South and Central Asia. With a strategic position along historic trade routes, its cultural richness is deeply influenced by various civilizations. Despite modern challenges, Afghan identity is strongly tied to its traditional sports which are vital to community bonding and cultural expression. Geographic Importance Afghanistan shares borders with six countries including Pakistan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and China. The country's diverse terrain, ranging from the Hindu Kush mountains to expansive deserts, has given rise to distinct regional sports traditions. Afghanistan's geographic location makes it a key player in fostering cultural connectivity through traditional games in both Central and South Asia. Traditional and Indigenous Sports in Afghanistan Afghanistan is globally known for Buzkashi, an equestrian game where players on horseback compete to carry a goat carcass to a goal. This rugged sport, rooted in nomadic Central Asian traditions, reflects endurance, strategy, and community honor. Other traditional Afghan sports include wrestling (Pahlawani), kite fighting (Gudiparan Bazi), and archery — all integral parts of Afghan festivals and rural life. Afghanistan’s Role in ICTSG History Afghanistan’s attendance at the UNESCO-hosted consultation in Istanbul was a crucial step toward forming the ICTSG. As a foundational participant, Afghanistan helped legitimize the creation of ICTSG as an autonomous platform. The country's alignment with the vision of promoting peace, identity, and sustainability through sports emphasizes its enduring cultural leadership. Weather and Climate Conditions Afghanistan experiences a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. The mountainous regions receive snow, supporting sports such as traditional skiing and snow wrestling, while plains allow for year-round horseback games like Buzkashi. Understanding these seasonal variations is critical for preserving and scheduling local sports that are adapted to natural conditions. UNSDG Alignment Afghanistan’s involvement in ICTSG aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

Goal 3 – Good Health and Well-being Goal 4 – Quality Education Goal 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Through ICTSG, Afghanistan contributes to educational programming, peacebuilding through sport, and cultural preservation aligned with global sustainability frameworks.   Historical Relevance and Future Contributions Afghanistan’s traditional sports have been a unifying force for centuries. The country is expected to play a key role in regional collaboration, especially in reviving indigenous games post-conflict. As ICTSG grows, Afghanistan’s deep cultural history and young population can help re-energize regional traditional sports events and educational programs for generations to come.
